Interview Tips and Strategies From Top Media Coach for TikTok Stars

As social-media stars cross over into mainstream fame, many find themselves facing a live audience or television camera for the first time. Even with millions of online fans, some creators fear these conversations, which they can’t curate or control.

Tracey Pepper has become their media coach of choice. Along with top TikTok influencers, her clients include pop stars, celebrities, and high-profile business leaders at companies like Apple and NARS, she told Insider.

She has coached them for appearances on shows like “Today” and “Ellen,” as well as red carpets at the Grammys and the Met Gala.
Media training has been a practice for decades, teaching how body language and verbal cues affect perceptions before a microphone, camera, or audience.

Publicists or agents will often tap media trainers to help clients who may be inexperienced or fearful of public speaking.

But conventional media training doesn’t work because it’s focused on exterior things, like what to say and do with your hands, said Pepper, a former journalist and editor who launched Tracey Pepper Coaching in 2009.

“If you tell people what to do, they won’t remember it. You’re just propping them up.”
A certified professional life coach, LA-based Pepper instead addresses root causes and even feelings that can affect performance.

“I worked with the president of a very big company who was so uncomfortable with public speaking that she turned down all opportunities,” she said. “It turned out she was dealing with childhood memories of getting shamed by a teacher. We worked together to clear those emotional obstacles.”

Another client, a TikTok influencer with more than 80 million followers, had social anxiety that prevented them from articulating themselves with press and in meetings. “After a series of sessions, they’re now handling major interviews and other opportunities as if they never struggled with public speaking at all.”

Even in an unmediated age, where celebrities and brands talk directly to fans, Pepper tells clients engaging with the press can grow your awareness and influence. “If you avoid interviews, you’ll just talk to people who’ve already heard you,” Pepper said. “Talking to media confers a legitimacy you don’t get when you control the content.”

Pepper shared five strategies anyone can use for more confident and effective communication, whether in a job interview, Zoom meeting, boardroom presentation – or even a TikTok video.

Talk with your hands, but don’t distract.
Experts say body language helps convey messages more forcefully, Pepper noted. “Gesturing and talking with your hands is great. You don’t want to be in a closed position,” she said.

But keep aware of tics that might distract a listener. “If you keep your hands too close to your face, for example, take a look at it to understand why.”

    Don’t rely on sound bites.
Media trainers often encourage clients to speak in sound bites. Pepper believes such canned scripts can harm authenticity.

“Audiences can tell when a line is rehearsed,” she said. “The average person doesn’t think or talk like that. Try to remember conversational speech and a natural tone.”

    Stand up to tough questions.
Unwanted questions are inevitable in any kind of interview, whether for media or a professional position.

“Don’t avoid answering or pretend you didn’t hear it,” Pepper said. “Say, ‘that’s a really tricky question, and my answer’s too complex for the short time we have.

But here’s what I can say’.” Evading tough questions can erode credibility, Pepper said. “If you say, ‘Great question, but here’s what I’m actually answering’, people lose trust.”

    Get comfortable with feeling uncomfortable.
Social media has made people “more afraid” of interviews and public speaking, Pepper said. “Take your ego out of it. It’s not about doing it perfectly, or controlling how people see you, which is impossible.” Think instead about “what you can offer the audience, the knowledge you have, your story.”

    Avoid rote memorization.
“I’ve seen people write out entire speeches and rehearse in front of a mirror,” Pepper said. “When you do that, you’re in your head and not present. Don’t try to memorize or learn your talk. Preparation means knowing your story.

When you get to that level of trust, that’s success.” It’s fine to “have a few notes in front of you with keywords, in case you get stuck.”
